There isn’t much need to cover the challenges of large item shipping as we’ve already done that in some of our previous articles. However, there is one question that many people ask – how to find proper packing materials or even an entire moving boxes for their large item. But this is more complicated than it seems.
No Universal Solution
Because large items aren’t all the same, there can’t be a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, you’d have to get creative or order a custom box. The latter may prove to be rather expensive and not necessarily effective, if you don’t get the dimensions properly. Many people don’t account for padding and cushioning, so they order a custom box, which then they find to be not big enough for proper safety measures.
So here you have it – there isn’t a clear-cut answer to finding a proper moving box. But don’t worry, we will give you some ideas how to be creative and what exactly to do, when you are trying to pack your large item.
The Piece-by-piece Approach
What we have found to work best is what we call “the piece-by-piece approach”. What it is essentially is a simple way of cushioning and protecting your item by using smaller boxes, which you cut down to intact pieces. The bigger the box the better, as you don’t want to wrap your item around in small cardboard pieces, which will do exactly nothing.
The good news is that you can find relatively large cardboard boxes in some large grocery stores, where they don’t recycle them, but throw them away. Even if they do recycle them, you can still ask if you can have a couple of bigger cardboard boxes – people will rarely mind giving them to you.
Additionally, stretch wrap and bubble wrap are a must. The good news is that they are easy to find, you can even buy them online and get them shipped straight to you. This even gives you the option of being a bit more specific about the size of the wrap as you wouldn’t be limited to just a couple of size variants. Also – don’t forget the tape. Duct tape or some sort of other sturdy, hard-to-tear tape will be fine.
After you’ve acquired everything, all you need to do is use your imagination a little bit. Don’t worry, you don’t have to get specifically creative, just think of the best way to wrap everything. A tip – put the stretch wrap first, then goes the cardboard, which you can easily tape to the wrap if you need, and then you add a nice layer of bubble wrap. Tape it up and there you go.
